Streetsigns in Moncton

ELECTION DAY!

I voted. I picked the one party that I would most like to see $1.75 of my tax dollars go to. That was about it. None of them provide any leadership potential or vision. Tonight, I'm hoping to finish my work up quickly and head home to watch Mike Duffy's election coverage. I'm dying to see if the Amazing Kreskin predicted the right results.

Now fess up. How many times did you get the "Vote For Stephen Harper" Email virus?

Interesting point of view...
>
> My name is Alan Robberstad I am a Canadian.
> One voter out of millions of Canadian voters.
>
> Paul Martin is no friend of mine.
> Liberal governments have not made my life any better.
> Liberal governments have made the future worse for my children.

So far, this thing has appeared in e-mail box 17 times!!! The polls aren't even closed yet so expect that tally to go up. How about you folks?

Chatham at a distance.

Yeji's here. She arrived safely last night, having successfully navigated herself (in English) across the world's largest ocean and second largest country. As you can expect, a full blog post will have to wait for another time.

Fog on the river.

Surprise surprise. I guess I will be voting in the election afterall. My voter's registration card came in the mail. I suspect this has to do with me requalifying for medicare, but I had expected (hoped) to be ineligible and therefore not have to make the party choice. Now it looks like I will have to make that decision... if indeed I don't just voluntarily stay home or spoil my ballot in rebellion.

The whole election is wretched. The Liberals have spun a majority into a situation where the only region they can count on getting seats may be Atlantic Canada. I've heard it predicted that they might only get a dozen seats in Quebec (out of seventy or so, the remainder of which are anticipated to go to the Bloc). Canada AM was covering Ontario voters this morning and released a poll saying the Liberals had a 1% lead in support (Grits 32%, Tories 31%, NDP 16%, Green 7%).

Military spending is one of my key concerns so it leaves me uncertain. The Tories are planning on shelling out cash to buy the Forces new equipment BUT their alignment with Washington's policies will require a much larger and better-equipped military than they'll be able to muster for the money.

The Liberal mudslinging is really bugging me. How necessary is it? Everyone is well aware of Harper's agenda. Calling attention to it so often and in such childish ways diminishes it. Please! Cabinet ministers crashing speeches? That interview this morning lasted less than 10 seconds before the Liberal candidate started raking muck. The Tory and the NDP'er, on the other hand, kept quite calm. Too calm, really. The Conservative candidates have a smugness about them when Liberals waste all their time on name calling and don't bother to wait for replies. The Tories seem to know that if they keep their mouths shut on how they really plan to handle things, the Liberals will go on and on, digging their own graves.

The Liberal platform (except for the wind power idea they ripped off from the NDP) is all old news and lacks clear definition. The Tories at least seem to have a plan. Sure, their plan involves selling us off to the yanks... but at least they have a plan.

Vote NDP you say? Now that the Liberals are talking about legalizing marijuana, that kind of takes the fun out of going pink, doesn't it?

Here's a good link: The 2004 PoliticsWatch.com VoteSelector Quiz. It's a useful quiz to help evaluate which political platform meshes most closely with your own beliefs. The only shortfall is that it doesn't take corruption into consideration-- nor is there a question about whether you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat object to, or strongly object to becoming the 51st state.

Random Avians

It's election time. Hard to believe, but the Tories are now being spoken of as possible winners of a minority government. Part of me still can't wrap my head around the topsy turviness of the thing, but suffice to say that the sponsorship scandal is sending Quebecers into the arms of the Block and Daltin McGinty's budget in Ontario has sent Liberal support through the floor there. That leaves the west, which is Tory country, and the Atlantic which could be anyone's guess, but doesn't account for a lot of seats in the grand scheme of things anyway.

The Tories did peak my interest with this morning's news. Stephen Harper has pledged to beef up the Canadian military, including new F-18's and new helicopter carriers-- as well as 20,000 more bodies in uniform. I expect the replacements for the Sea Kings there too. BUT... then I read he's only planning on spending $1.2 Billion. When you factor in a decade and a half of cuts, that money would barely be enough to plug up the holes in what we have now. It'd probably translate to a bit of a wage increase but most of it would likely be used up immediately on spare parts and basic logistical items to fix all the stuff that's sitting around broken or obsolete. Things like helicopter carriers (which I support) have a much bigger price tag. We also need new transport aircraft to replace the Hercs, new tanks (not the wheeled, off-road vehicles that are currently scheduled to be called "tanks" to save money), new SAR helicopters, upgrades to the F-18s and concrete plans to purchase Joint Strike Fighters (a development program Canada chipped in for and sure as Hell had better take advantage of). Oh yeah, and bring back the Airborn Regiment.

My god. I'm talking as if that western Satan occidental devil Tory-come-lately fellow has already won.

In other news, I failed my civil disobedience test by passing my firearms safety test last Friday (a squandering of 40 bucks). I passed without any problems, but I think I'll wait until after the election before I see if I have to shell out another $100 for my firearms card. With luck, the firearms registry will be one of the first to be dismissed under whatever new regime comes to power.
